About two months ago, Minix lifted the covers on their new Minix X7 design at the HK Global Sources Electronics & Components Trade Show. However, shortly after that, there was a posting on their Facebook page that Minix was going to change the design of the X7.
Since then we have waited patiently for the new Minix X7 design and today, a new post was made on their Facebook page which showed the new design. It turns out that the new Minix X7 design is actually the old Minix X5 design. Gone is the racing car rear design. It is now replaced with the old but elegant looking boxy design that bear some resemblance to the Apple TV.
While I am a little disappointed that Minix did not encase the X7 in a bold new design, I have to admit that between the old design and the new “old” design, I pick the boxy design any time.
The other thing that we learn from this reveal is that the SoC is indeed the quad-core Rockchip RK3188 that we speculated on earlier. The rest of the specification remains the same – 2GB DDR3 memory, 16 GB NAND flash storage, WiFi, Ethernet LAN and Bluetooth. OS is going to be Jelly Bean 4.1 with an update to 4.2 later on. The new design also shows a WiFi antenna that will be of great help in improving WiFi reception.
What we do not know however is whether the Minix X7 will still be available in both black and white.
