F9 Android set top boxGadgets retailer Geekbuying is expected to start selling the F9 Android set top box anytime now. The F9 is powered by the Samsung Exynos 4412 Cortex-A9 1.6 GHz Quad Core CPU. This Samsung Exynos is the same chip that is used in the popular Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone. This is the first device that I know of that uses the Samsung quad core chip.

It is interesting to note that the technology used on these Android devices are fast catching up to the latest technology used in cutting edge smartphones.

Besides the quad core CPU, the F9 Android set top box’s display output resolution is at a native 1080p and not upscaled 720p which is normally the case with such devices. The rest of the hardware specification for the F9 seems more run of the mill with 1GB RAM and 8GB storage (2GB / 16GB is available as an option), Android 4.0, 2 USB ports, a micro SD slot and a HDMI port.

It comes with a 2.4 GHz remote control but there is no mention if the remote is an air mouse remote or not. The plastic housing is rather plain looking and it has 4 mounting holes at the back of the unit. It looks like these holes are for mounting the box at the back of the TV. This could make the F9 a good candidate for building a display kiosk.

The F9 Android tv box is one of the first quad core based mini Android devices but it definitely won’t be the last. I expect many more quad core devices to be launched in the coming months. There are other quad core chipsets like the Rockchip RK3188 and the Allwinner A31 that would be ideal as well for such devices.
