Back in January, Androydz posted on the WISE TIVI. Back then, WISE TIVI consisted of 3 different devices that had different form factors but similar hardware specifications. Nothing much was heard about WISE TIVI but I have just been notified that WISE TIVI has started an Indiegogo campaign.
However, the WISE TIVI is now just a single device instead of the original 3. Only the Android TV stick form factor remains while the TV box and TV mounted camera form factors are no longer being offered.
Nothing else seems to have changed though. The hardware specification remains the same with a dual core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU and quad core Mali 400MP GPU. As I speculated in my original article, this is most likely a Rockchip RK3066 chip. The Rockchip RK3066 dual core chip has pretty good performance and is a very popular choice among Android mini PC manufacturers.
Other specs include 1 GB DDR3 RAM and 8GB Nand Flash ROM. Built in WiFi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0. HDMI 1.3 for video output. 1 USB 2.0 host port. 1 micro USB for power and micro SD expansion slot. OS version is listed as Android 4.1.1.
The UI is listed as “Google Interface” so that probably means that it is using the default Android UI with no additional enhancements. This can be both a pro and a con. Designed properly, a customized interface can be of great convenience as Android is primarily designed for a touch interface. A simple launcher designed for a remote control can make navigation much less frustrating especially for less tech savvy users.
On the other hand, a poorly designed interface with garish graphics can be a big turn off as well.
From the specification and looks of the WISE TIVI, it seems to be a rebranded iMito MX1. The MX1 is one of the more popular Android mini PCs with decent support from the open source community. Custom ROMs like the popular Finless ROMs have been ported over to the MX1.
Pledges for the WISE TIVI starts at $79 with free shipping to the US and selected countries. This comes with just the WISE TIVI itself in either blue or brown. The campaign hopes to raise a total of $100,000 by the end of May.
WISE TIVI is also offering an optional air mouse keyboard as one of the rewards for backers of the campaign. The option with both the WISE TIVI and the keyboard costs $109.
At this moment I am not particularly impressed with the WISE TIVI and what it has to offer. Perhaps I might change my mind later when more details are revealed. Right now, I am not seeing anything that an iMito MX1 or any of the other Bluetooth enabled RK3066 based Android mini PC cannot offer. I am not seeing any customization or additional development work from WISE TIVI to make it stand out from existing competition. Furthermore, the trend is now moving towards quad core devices so the dual core WISE TIVI may be a little late out of the gate.
